My number one priority is to protect my children, but in this world it is not always easy to do. The Internet is A parent’s number one enemy, or so I thought until recently. I was convinced that there was nothing online for kids except for danger and information that they don’t need to know until they are older. Although I had seen advertisements for online fun for kids, I couldn’t believe them. I didn’t really trust web filters, and I was worried about my kids inadvertently running into something that they shouldn’t see – something that could really do some psychological damage to them.
When you are setting up online for kids, you really need to think about what could possibly go wrong. A Web filter is a good idea, but it is only the beginning. E-mail is one of the most dangerous places online for kids. According to one of my friends who writes a parent’s blog, a huge proportion of the spam that gets sent out contain subjects that are unsuitable for children. You need to supervise your child’s e-mail closely or else he or she can get in all kinds of trouble.
There are many great resources online for kids, so it is worth the time to set things up so they can use the Internet safely. There is even online tutoring for kids to help them out with any last-minute school problems if you want to sign up for that service. Whether we like it or not, the Internet is here to stay. It is much better for us to make sure that our children use it correctly than to deprive them of it completely.
Fortunately, one of the other parents set me straight. I was expressing my hesitation with regards to the Web when she showed me all kinds of online kids websites. Apparently, there are literally thousands of online educational games for kids. Some of these games online for kids are so much fun that her children can’t wait to play them, and best of all they are educational. I did some searching myself and I found out there was more on the Web that she didn’t even know about. There is online tutoring for kids, books online, and even websites for children to do reports for school topics. The Internet really is a kid friendly place – you just need to take the right precautions.
