I wanted to go to another level….

The cake decorating techniques that I was able to learn in this class, however, completely took me to another level. They absolutely blew me away. Cake decorating technique is basically an entire artform. It isn’t just a matter of making a cake look pretty. There are textural techniques, decorative effects, effects that are useful for drawing images of faces or backgrounds. Basically, anything that you could conceivably imagine someone doing to a cake has been done. The experts can make cakes so beautiful that it would be a shame to eat them!

I was not the most artistic cake decorator…

Until I took a pastry class, I had no idea how many cake decorating techniques there were. I always thought that decorating a cake was a pretty simple affair. When I was growing up, my mother loved to make cakes. She showed me a couple simple designs that you can use on a cake, and I copied her designs faithfully. I can make flowers, swirls, little ice cream cones, and of course all the letters in the alphabet. I was not the most artistic cake decorator, but I knew enough to make a pretty professional looking cake.

I am forty-six years old and have no problem admitting I am utterly fixated on, transfixed by, American Idol. I wanted to be—after writer for hire—a singer. So I identify with the challenges, the competitiveness, the esteem and wavering of esteem that is attached to climbing the musical tree to be the star at the top.

From The Gong Show to Star Search to Pop Idol to American Idol…Americans (and others) are a very spoiled (and very large) bunch of talent show viewers. If it sings, we listen. If it wants to sing but cracks and flounders, we watch. If it makes it to singing and nearly flopping then returning to sing again we vote. And if it, now glamorous and far-ranging she, now inventive and iconoclastic he, can withstand the back-biting, the front-stabbing, and the hisses, boos, cheers, cries, and laughs, she/he might just become the apple of our American Idol eyes, the center of our American Idol focus, and the priority of our American Idol purchases.

Further, I appreciate a great, nurtured voice (as one with a kick-ass country-rock style that once riveted her own listeners, ahem). I respect singers who can stand in front of the practiced, experienced wisdom of Paula, the in-crowd understanding of what works musically of Randy, and the caustic but honest brutality of what works financially of Simon.

American Idol genre choice..

After Fantasia, who was (is) the most musically effusive, most physically immersed, and most adeptly skilled beyond the margins vocal genius since Janis Joplin and Patti LaBelle and Bette Midler combined, I was proud of the rockers who (in 2005) invaded the otherwise “eh” American Idol genre choice (though I am well aware that pop sells and that the largest album-buying crowd right now is the bubble gum-snapping pre-teen). As a former seventies adolescent, that is, I screamed and groaned in ecstasy whenever a rocker ripped off a brilliant version of songs by Sting, Nickleback, Greg Allman, Otis Redding, Lynnard Skynnard, and more. Of course, that’s when the singer nails it. When the performer sings a slow, mournful ballad but is hopping and grinning, or when he/she is cracking and unsure and destroying the memory for me, I am less than pleased and thinking up ways to ensure that boob never sings again.

I literally hold my breath as I phone in to vote…

Like thousands, during the audience-decided rounds, I anxiously, literally hold my breath as I phone in to vote and have to hit redial until the automaton says thanks for voting for Nadia Turner, Constantine Maroulis, Vonzell Solomon, and, especially, Beau Bice. [Sorry Carrie, can’t stomach the balloon with a wig persona attached to a not all that remarkable in range or creativity or wisdom voice.] The only American Idol behavior I stop short of is holding up signs, which no one but my poor, overwhelmed roommates would see. But I use the right names a lot, chanting for Vonzell, cooing about Clay, and Canvassing for Beau as if I had some stake in the show.

The problem I have with kids Easter baskets is the candy. Candy is great, we all know that, but we also know that there is no need to have a lot of it. Not only is it empty calories, some children are nuts when given too much sugar, and one of those children is mine. When I go out to buy her kids Easter baskets, I made sure I know what is in it, and what I can get out of it before I give it to her. Some years I have had to make my own because I haven’t found anything that I like.

We all celebrate Easter!

Each year we celebrate Easter, but I worry about putting together kids Easter baskets for my daughter. Though I only get her one, I know that my mother is going to get her one as well, and I have to tell her what I want her to get so she does not fill the entire thing with candy. I allow my daughter to have a little candy, but there is a limit. Most of the candy she gets will end up in the trash, so there is no sense in buying a lot when something else might be more useful.

We then added some flip flops and some sunglasses, along with a blow up toy for the summer time. She was pleased with what she got, and she got great use out of each of the items. Geography For Kids, Have Fun And Learn New Things!

The choice of geographic region is up to you. You may want to choose your home state, your county or the entire United States. When deciding, you’ll want to include a wide mix of geographic elements if possible. If you choose a region which has rivers, lakes, mountains, seashore and grasslands, the kids will get a good concept of the many variations of geographic areas. For example, a region such as the Northwest, the South or a state such as California are diverse enough to be representative, while being a manageable project scope.

You need lot of creativity!

Teaching kids involves a lot of creativity for successful learning. At the grade school level, subjects in the field of science can fail to grab the attention of a youngster, simply due to the poor presentation of the topic. Geography is one subject that is well suited to modeling. Here are a couple of projects that are terrific lessons in geography for kids, inspiring enthusiasm with a hands-on art project. Kids get to team up at a table and create three dimensional maps that show a bird’s eye view of any geographic region you may choose. Once the kids have completed either of these projects, they’ll have a firm grasp of the principles of geography and may likely be wanting to know more.

Now you’re ready to purchase the supplies you’ll need. Get a piece of plain masonite approximately 24 x 48 inches. You’ll also need modeling clay, a set of acrylic paints, brushes and a map of your region from the U.S. Geographic Service. Craft aprons are a good idea. O.K. Class time!

Try not to be too picky on precise placement. The main point is to show geographic variances. When the kids have the geographic elements placed in a fair representation of your map, it’s time to get out the paint.

Use the map to show the kids how you read the map, where hilly and mountainous areas show the contours of elevations. Explain how to find lakes and rivers. Give the kids a basic visual tour. Let them know how they are going to translate this map into a 3-D picture with modeling clay and then paint their map. Let them get their modeling clay and go for it! You can use craft sticks to put scores in mountains and rivers to demonstrate the unevenness of actual terrain and moving water.

Sandstone cliffs, the earth’s crust or volcanic areas are excellent geography for kids projects, showing the layers of clay, shale, granite and other materials. The next Harry Potter game was Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, again for the single player.

The success of the Harry Potter books and films has been phenomenal. They are popular with children of all ages and adults too. The franchise is said to be worth a cool $4 billion! The wait between each book and film is agony for the fans and so a Harry Potter game fills the gap. There are board games, card games, action figures based on the characters and electronic games to keep them entertained. There is also a Wizard Chess Set, based on the chess game played by Harry, Ron and Hermione in the first of the series.
