Little book….
I really enjoyed reading that book with my daughter because it seemed to portray all emotions as having their place, rather than enforcing the idea that everybody has to have a happy face all of the time. In real life, sometimes mommy is happy and then you will see her happy face. And yet at other times, perhaps mommy is somewhat sad. This little book had a lighthearted way of showing a whole range of emotions and teaching children the importance of looking at a person’s face to figure out how they are feeling. I think that books like this, while seemingly simple, can have very definite impacts on a child’s social awareness and help them to realize that life doesn’t been being surrounded by a happy face at every turn.
“If you’re happy like this king, you will smile at every thing”
When my daughter was quite small we used to read a book called Copycat Faces. In that book we would see all these cute little children making a whole range of faces. Her favorite page was the happy face page where it said: If you’re happy like this king, you will smile at every thing! My little daughter was grin and laugh with glee whenever we came to this page. (I hope that the fact that the king was the guy with the happy face didn’t instill in my child a belief that riches equate with happiness… but that’s another topic!)
Where is it?
Sometimes when I’m deep in thought, I’ll tend to to stare off into the distance. In this pensive state I tend to forget how my face might look, and perhaps my daughter sees somewhat of a scowl. I know this because she’s ask me where my happy face has gone, and I’ll be somewhat startled, surprised that my face had assumed a darker scowl. I’ll quickly put on a happy face once again and assure her that I was only thinking. She’ll look at me doubtfully and then continue playing.
Lot of happy faces…
Whenever my daughter draws a picture of a person she always makes sure they have a happy face. That seems to be a good indication of her state of mind and also seems to indicate that she sees a lot of happy faces around her. She is only four, but I don’t think I’m reading too much into her preference. I have seen her draw a scary monster face and even a sad face on occasion. However, her preference truly seems to be for a happy face.
Mom probably still has the Christmas tree ornament that you made in fourth grade….
One of the best birthday presents for Mom is something that you made yourself. Sure, it sounds a little smarmy, it sounds a little like you’re still in fourth grade and you’re making ornaments for the family tree, but think about this: Mom probably still has the Christmas tree ornament that you made in fourth grade. It’s probably buried in a box somewhere and she always thinks of you whenever she puts it up on the tree, which happens every year. Though the wool sweater you found for her last year was probably more expensive and in better taste, there’s a good chance it didn’t mean as much to her as the ornament did, unless maybe you knitted the sweater.
Mom likes cute things…
Choosing a birthday present for Mom really isn’t all that difficult. Honestly, it isn’t, even for the mom who has everything. In fact, if anything, choosing a birthday present for Mom is even easier than choosing presents for anyone else in the family. Why? What makes her so special? Mom is easy to shop for because Mom likes cute things, and if you look in the right places cute things are very easy to find.
Treasured memories…
Try to find something to do with the desert, either a cactus or a woven blanket or a sombrero, whatever the gift include with it a photo from your trip. Eventually one of you will say “do you remember the time that we…” and it’ll be off on a trip to memory lane. After that, every time she uses your present or sees it on the shelf she’ll think of that trip and all of the good memories. What better gift than treasured memories? Finally, Moms like to be pampered, and you can never go wrong with a spa treatment or a towel warmer.
Maybe you can frame a photo..
So think, what can you make for Mom that nobody else can? Maybe you can knit her a sweater. Or make her another ornament. Maybe you can frame a photo of the two of you together, or throw her a pot out of clay. Whatever it is, there’s a good chance she’ll appreciate it, regardless of how much it cost you or how much time it took to make. As an educator I have seen many changes in the children that come through my classroom. I have been in the classroom for twenty seven years. When I started the rules were simple, discipline was feared, kids were curious and manners were good. Today rules and regulations are repeated like a litany, discipline is questioned by the student and their parent and kids are more into MTV and cell phones and ipods to concentrate on their studies. It would be wonderful if the present generation would take the time to include their children in the process as they learn some of these hints that help make a household run better. Many things such as removing a stain from upholstery or carpet or substituting ingredients in a recipe or repairing a tear in fabric, are activities that can be done with the children watching or participating. I have found with my grandchildren that I will ask them to read me the instructions for a recipe that we are making together. Let’s say you’re meeting with your boss to discuss a proposed project. You should not arrive at the meeting unprepared. Take the time to sit down and order your material in a written format. You wouldn’t begin with telling him how one of your objectives should be met. You first want to state the problem which justifies the project. Then you might go into a step-by-step itemization of the objectives, how each will be met and the time required to implement each objective. You might conclude with any open issues. Your boss will surely appreciate the clarity, organization and logic of your presentation.

They get so involved with their own point of view that the other person feels completely left out and stops listening or reading. The savings usually weren’t enough…
Of course, before learning about great family vacation packages, I still tried to save money on travel whenever possible.
